AMRITSAR: SAD-BJP candidate Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar has won election while defeating his nearest rival of Congress Om Parkash Soni. He has made a hat trick.
While winning election from Amritsar Sidhu made hat-trick, as earlier he remained two times winner from Amritsar constituency with heavy margin but this time Sidhu won with narrow margin of 6858 while defeating Congress rival candidate Om Parkash Soni sitting MLA from Amritsar West Assembly segment.
However, Sidhu was declared winner, amidst chaos, since his rival candidate Soni requested for recounting before Election Returning officer cum Deputy Commissioner Amritsar Bhagwant Singh who while rejecting the request of Soni said that recounting would not be done since at the time of counting Soni’s agent were present in the counting centre.
However, Soni was being considered strong candidate by the Congress high command as he had already maintained hat-trick from Amritsar West Assembly segment which had made election contest for Sidhu quite tougher. Sidhu’s election was most important as senior BJP leader L.K Advani himself had spoken to alliance partner SAD Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to make sure the victory of BJP candidate from Amritsar. BJP kept keen interest in Sidhu’s victory since he was one of the star campaigners of BJP.
The credit of Sidhu’s victory goes to former cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia who was the overall incharge of Sidhu’s election campaign and succeeded to get lead more than ten thousand from Majitha assembly segment where Bikram himself is sitting MLA.
It is noteworthy here that on the persistence demand of BJP top leadership, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had appointed former cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia as a incharge of Sidhu’s election campaign .
Earlier, first time, in the previous general parliament election Sidhu retained this seat with heavy margin while defeating the sitting Congress MP R.L. Bhatia (currently Governor Bihar). In 2007 Sidhu again contested election from Amritsar parliament seat as this seat went vacant after his resignation.
Sidhu had to resign when convicted in culpable homicide case for the period of three years by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. However, later on Supreme Court had extended relief while suspending his sentence till the final verdict of case, which paved way to Sidhu once again to contest election from Amritsar Parliament seat. Sidhu had won the election while defeating the then sitting Congress Finance Minister Surinder Singla with 77626 votes in the year of 2007.
