From three flights to 56, Amritsar ready for take-off

AMRITSAR: "Just a few years ago, it was a one-plane stop. But now, Rajasansi Airport is fast becoming a buzzing hub of international action and getting a new look, too.
 
Singapore Airline, which landed here four months ago, has been going full, three days a week. And with a new terminal likely to open in October, British Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Phuket Airlines, Tajikistan Airlines, Uzbek Airways and Air-India are also lining up a landing here, say officials.
 
With Air-India starting its Amritsar-Birmingham-Toronto-Amritsar service on May 15, the number of flights will go up to 56 a week, a big leap from a mere three in 1997.
 
Even cargo flights, such as those of Ariana to Kabul, are planning to double their flights from three to six in a week, while First Flight, a courier service, has evinced interest in starting operations, say officials.
 
With air traffic surging by as much as 41 per cent in the last four years, V.S Mulekar, Director, Airport Authority of India (AAI), says most of these airlines are planning to cash in on Punjabi NRI passengers.
 
‘‘That is the main incentive. For, at Rs 1 lakh a flight, the operating rates here are akin to those charged at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International airport though the facilities here are far inferior,'' says Mulekar.
 
The AAI, he says, is now tackling the Rajasansi challenge on a war footing with a budget of Rs 79 crore, which also explains the haze of dust that hangs over the airport these days.
 
He admits that the airport, so far, hasn't lived up to the ‘‘international'' status it was accorded in 1999. The tin shed that doubles up as terminal, lack of basic amenities like chairs, trolleys, and booths for customs make for a miserable experience for passengers.
 
‘‘We know passengers are facing inconvenience now but once it (the makeover) is completed, it will be a top-notch international airport,'' says Mulekar.
 
At Rajasansi, work is on at full swing, the new terminal is already towering over the complex and the cargo apparatus is preparing to receive over 50 flights per week from the current 25.
 
The AAI is also factoring in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) status granted to Amritsar by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently.
 
‘‘Now cargo flights comprise only 10 per cent, but they are likely to double once the SEZ comes through,'' says Molekar.
 
The AAI has also decided to develop 28,000 sq metres of land for core airport operations, instead of the 15,000 sq metres planned earlier.
 
In fact, Molekar promises to throw open the revamped terminal building this October. The runway extension, too, is complete and bigger aircraft would now be able to land here and take off without any hitch, he says, night vision facilities and fog lighting are next on the agenda.
 
‘‘It was inevitable,'' says V N Sharma, a city-based international tour operator. ‘‘The IGI airport receives an average of 16 to 18 million passengers a year, half of whom are Punjabis. They would definitely prefer landing in the Holy City instead of distant Delhi.''

Dear all,
 
I've been to Amritsar 4 times in total, (even flew with Ariana in 93!) never had any problems...
 
I always fly with Uzbekistan, touchwood no problems....
 
Haven't been for 2 years, what is like now?

There is confusion on whether work on the airport has stopped or not . Please could somebody responsible for the airport make a satement on when the airport is to be completed. Only last week it was raised by MS Gill MP that work had stopped on the airport

RAJASANSI, NOVEMBER 28 2004: An old tractor with three trolleys stringed to it — that’s the first glimpse for a passenger when a plane taxies down at Rajasansi Airport in Amritsar. And it’s only a preface to what follows. Travellers from across Europe and North America test out the lack of facilities almost everyday at the only international airport in the country, north of the Capital.  
 
Rajasansi, on the global civil aviation map since 1999, receives more than 35 flights a week. Indian Airlines, Uzbekistan Air and Turkmenistan Airlines touch down eight times a week; Air India, Air Slovakia and Ariana fly in twice each; Singapore Airlines, the latest entrant, makes three landings every seven days. Plus, there are cargo flights by Slovak Air.  
 
All these land in front of a makeshift terminal — essentially a shed with a roof assembled from iron sheets which serves as a passenger lounge, boarding counter, security checkpoint...There isn’t much here except the runway and immigration counter to lend it the semblance of an airport. No food counters, phone booths, not even a conveyor belt.  
 
A lone minibus with frayed seats ferries passengers to and from the aircraft. Bhai Ranjit Singh, former Akal Takht jathedar and a regular traveller, says the place reminds him of a bus stand. Brij Bedi, convenor of Citizen Forum, rued the airport mirrors the poor infrastructure of rural Punjab.  
 
Regional director of Airports Authority of India, S.V.Molekar, however, said upgrade work was on and the new terminal would be completed by October, 2005. Work had been delayed as the contractor was changed midway, he said.

Amritsar may 10, The punjab Tourisim minister Mr Jagmohan kang, yesterday expressed concern about the delay in the upgrading of the raja sansi airport which was sanctioned by the union goverment at an estimated cost Rs 79.27 crore. During a visit to the airport, The minister annouce that he would take up the issueof of the delay with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan singh and urge him to direct the Minister concern to expedite the renovation and Expansion of the airport. Talking to newsperson the Minister pointed out discrepancies in restricted space for passangers arriving in the holding area.

CM to flag off Air-India flight to England, Canada

The Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, and the Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, will flag off the Air-India flight to England and Canada from Sri Guru Ram Das International Airport on May 15, which is being revived after a gap of 20 years.  
 
The station manager, Air-India, Mr Ashwani Arora, told The Tribune here today that all the arrangements for the launch of the national carrier’s flight had been completed. A team from the Civil Aviation Department, Canada, also visited the airport on a familiarisation tour to get first-hand information about the flight pattern and the passenger profiles here last week.
 
Mr Arora said that there was a tremendous enthusiasm among the large Punjabi NRI community based in the Doaba region and the inaugural flight was fully booked. Air-India was receiving a number of enquiries for this first-ever direct flight connecting the holy city with Birmingham and Toronto. He said that Air-India had designated Boeing 777 for this route.  
 
Air-India had been operating Balle Balle Birmingham from Rajasansi airport, but due to militancy the flight was discontinued. The re-launch of the flight to Birmingham and also connecting Punjabi-dominated city of Toronto have once again provided the much-needed relief to the Punjabi community settled in Canada and England.

Plea on Amritsar Airport /Flights
 
TNS adds: National Commission for Minorities Chairman Tarlochan Singh, who is also a member of the Civil Aviation Ministry’s advisory committee, has demanded that the frequency of the Amritsar-Birmingham-Toronto flight from May 15 should be made daily instead of the present schedule of thrice a week on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.
 
Making several other suggestions at a meeting of the Civil Aviation Ministry’s advisory committee here today, the NCM chief emphasised that upgradation of the Amritsar airport, including a provision for handling of cargo, should be undertaken expeditiously. He called for early completion of the Amritsar airport building which had been stopped as a new design was being prepared.
 
The meeting chaired by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said turning the Amritsar-Birmingham-Toronto flight into a daily would be taken up after more aircraft were made available. He said work on the building at Amritsar airport would commence soon and the arrival hall completed at the earliest. Orders have been placed for trollies for carrying the luggage.
 
Mr Tarlochan Singh said the Airport Authority of India should revise is rates for international flights from Amritsar airport as those being charged now were too high and not commensurate with the facilities available at present. He pleaded that the Air India Express introduced recently from Kerala to the Gulf should be extended to Amritsar as a large number of Punjabis were also working in that region.

Are there any plans to increase the number of flights from the London Airports to Amritsar? Most of the new flights are from Birmingham and there are large numbers of Sikh/Punjabis in and around London who would like to fly on quality airlines to Amritsar.

The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, today brushed aside the resentment over the stalled construction of the terminal of Sri Guru Ramdass International Airport and assured the public that a bigger and modern complex would be built.
 
Addressing a gathering during the flag-off ceremony of the inaugural Air-India’s Delhi-Amritsar-Birmingham-Toronto flight here today, Mr Patel said top priority was being given to restart the construction of the ultra-modern airport. He, however, said the project could be delayed by another six months as the Ministry of Civil Aviation, in consultation with the Airport Authority of India (AAI), was preparing a blueprint for the its upgradation.
 
Earlier, the flight was flagged off from New Delhi by Tourism Minister Renuka Chowdhury and Mr Patel.
 
He said the Air-India was prepared to make this flight operational on a daily basis instead of thrice a week at present in view of its growing demand. A direct international flight of Air-India Express, an economical flight from Amritsar to Dubai, was also on the anvil. He said the Air-India had recently launched a direct flight from Kerala to Dubai and another direct flight from Kolkata to London was likely to commence shortly.  
 
Referring to the setting up of a green field airport at Ladowal between Ludhiana and Jalandhar, Mr Patel said the project had been cleared by the government and was in the advanced stage of implementation. It would come up on the same pattern of green field airports already set up in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Lucknow. He said Chandigarh Airport would also be upgraded to meet the growing need of the people of this area.  
 
Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder Singh, said the government was set to chalk out a roadmap to boost religious tourism in the state.
 
He said the government was contemplating to develop religious tourism by connecting Sri Anandpur Sahib, Chamkaur Sahib, Fatehgarh Sahib, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib and Sri Harmandir Sahib. Another circuit of Hindu shrines from Naina Devi, Maisarkhana, Durgiana Temple and Vaishno Devi would also be developed in a big way.  
 
Later Capt Amarinder Singh along with Mr Patel flagged off the flight.
 
Meanwhile, the General Manager (Architect) of the AAI, Mr Harpal Singh, today made the detail presentation of the new design of the Airport Complex to the Minister of Civil Aviation and visiting dignitaries.
 
The Director Airport, Mr V.S. Mulekar, said the minister showed keen interest in the development of the airport and said the complex would be ready within a year.
 
The minister was accompanied by MPs attached to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Mr Tarlochan Singh, Chairman, National Minorities Commission, among others.

Raja Sansi airport

Could anyone tell me that what is the difference in changing the airport's name from "Raja Sansi" airport to "Sri Guru Ram Das International airport". These have appeared in recent news reports about recent Air India flight launches to Toronto.  
 
Please reply back ASAP and tell me what is the difference in these names.

Passenger demand for the newly launched flight from Amritsar
 
There is great passenger demand for the Birmingham flight, even in the business class.  
 
The inaugural flight was jam-packed and the flight is booked for the next two months. There is strong demand from the market to make the flight a daily one. (At present, the flight operates three times a week).  
 
This is one route that we have to service. The airline is also looking at providing surface transportation to passengers travelling on this flight and wanting to go to Heathrow airport in London.

I would prefer a flight from London (heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted) direct to Amritsar. Is there any scope for this?

Amritsar airport terminal building to become operational by August

The much-delayed work on Amritsar's Rajasansi International Airport terminal building, which had remained stalled for a considerable period of time and generated some controversy due to it's redesigning , has finally been given a go-ahead by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. It is likely to become operational next month.  
 
The Chairman of the National Minorities Commission and member of the Parliamentary Panel on Civil Aviation, Mr Tarlochan Singh, told The Tribune on phone from New Delhi that the Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, had assured the panel that the arrival block of the terminal building phase I was already under construction. It was planned to be completed and put into operation by the end of this month. The equipment for the arrival block had already arrived.  
 
He added that work was continuing simultaneously on the departure area of the terminal building and was likely to be completed by October 2005. The minister promised that the entire terminal building would be ready by November this year. Plans were also underway to expand the terminal building in view of the manifold increase in the passenger traffic at the Amritsar International Airport.
 
The Director Airport, Mr V.S Mulekar, too said the ministry had given the go-ahead and the entire conveyor belt equipment and other amenities were being added on war footing to complete the project and to commence the operation by next month.
 
Mr Tarlochan Singh said during the Parliamentary meeting of the Ministry of Civil Aviation held on July 11 he had strongly favoured that the cargo potential of Punjab should be fully exploited to benefit the local industry and agriculture. He had suggested that Air-India and Indian Airlines should commence cargo flights from the Amritsar airport. Air-India had already offered 15 tonnes of cargo payloads on its flights to Birmingham and Canada for the benefit of exporters based in Punjab.
 
A Rajya Sabha Member, Mr Tarlochan Singh, lauded the ministry for starting Air-India flight from Amritsar and added that the Air-India Express, a low-cost airline, was keen on starting its operations from Amritsar very soon. He added that the Air- India Express was already operating from three cities in Kerala and had become popular.
 
The Airport Authority of India, despite having been under fire for not providing passenger amenities, had not ordered 500 additional trolleys at the airport. However, it was expected that trolleys would be added within the next two months.
 
Mr Tarlochan Singh pointed out that the present air-conditioning in both arrival and departure lounge, including security areas, would be further augmented and the process was likely to be completed by the end of August. He added that at present the Amritsar airport was charging only domestic rates from the various airlines, and no international airport charges were being made.
 
At present more than 58 flights are operating during the week taking passengers to various destinations around the globe. More than two and half lakh passengers use the airport around the year and by the end of 2010 the figure is going to jump at least five lakh.

250 passengers escape Air India plane fire

Amritsar, July 20: Nearly 250 passengers, onboard an Air India flight to Canada from new Delhi via Amritsar, had a narrow escape today when one of its wheels caught fire immediately after the plane landed at International Rajasansi Airport here.  
 
Airport Director V S Mulekar confirmed the incident but refused to give details saying that all passengers were safe.  
 
Giving details of the incident, airport sources said as soon as the Air India Delhi-Amritsar-Canada flight 187 landed at Rajasansi International Airport here, one of its wheels caught fire.  
 
Fire tenders were pressed into service and the blaze was controlled within no time. No passengers were hurt in the incident, they said.  
 
The passengers will now travel to Canada by another flight past midnight, they said.  
 
The plane was sent to Mumbai for repair.

Minister urged to improve airport facilities

The Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, and Rajya Sabha Member, Mr Tarlochan Singh, has urged the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, to depute a committee of senior officers to assess the immediate requirements of Rajasansi International Airport at Amritsar.  
 
Mr Tarlochan Singh, in a letter to the minister, a copy of which was released to Amritsar Plus, appreciated the “go ahead” signal given by the minister for the completion of arrival and departure lounges at the newly-constructed terminal building at the airport.  
 
He said that in view of more than 50 weekly flights being operational from the airport and a large number of passengers using the facilities, the improvement in infrastructure was a must. As the facilities were not up to the mark, there was resentment among NRIs and foreign tourists visiting the Holy City.  
 
It may be recalled that the minister for civil aviation had stalled the construction of the modern terminal building in view of the new design. This caused a considerable delay in the opening of the arrival and departure lounges. Mr Tarlochan Singh added that he had urged the minister to allow the use of the newly-constructed terminal building for the convenience of the passengers.

Following unprecedented passenger rush, the “Corporate Headquarters, Airport Authority of India” (AAI), Delhi, has approved a sum of Rs 80 crore for the upgrade of Rajasansi International Airport here.  
A similar sum of Rs 79.76 crore had earlier been approved for the airport.  
The airport has become a lucrative destination for overseas airlines, with a number of new airlines starting their operations here. With 45 flights a week, the volume of passengers has increased manifold and is currently at three lakh per annum — three times more than expected.  
Keeping this in view, the original design of the airport is being proposed to be modified with fresh additions.  
V.S. Mulekar, who has prepared the project to increase the terminal area and for the state-of-the-art facilities at the airport, said the present terminal building would prove to be inadequate in relation with the passenger statistics and confirmed that a formal approval for the grant was given on August 11.  
A majority of the funds would go into increasing the constructed area from the present of 17,500 sq ft to 32,000 sq ft, with an addition of another storey to the incomplete terminal building.  
A sum of Rs 28 crore would be utilised on air-conditioning plants and corresponding backup, including a 66 KV power substation.  
To give the state-of-the-art look to the interiors, its two stories would be divided using “skalzip” — a new transparent building material with additional insulation. For this, some pillars and certain portion of the roof would be pulled down.  
The terminal building would be facilitated with world-class duty-free shopping arcades, four sets of escalators, same number of passenger elevators, four baggage conveyer belts of 60 m in length each, common user terminal (CUT) system with 16 check-in counters (to be increased to 30), world-class weighing scales-cum-X ray machines on conveyor belts, underground public address system, close circuit cameras, smoking zones, cellophane wrapping facility, special toilets for the handicapped, besides baggage reconciliation system.  
A new telephone exchange, four “aero-bridges”, instead of the previous one, besides advanced lightening arrestors would be installed.  
The project also envisages beautification of approach to the airport, including new lighting, landscaping and fountains.  
The current visitors’ hall would be demolished to make way for a new concept of central concourse hall for visitors and passengers. A fee of Rs 30 each would be charged from each visitor there.  
A snack bar, cabins for childcare, medical inspection room, smoking zones, office for various airlines besides a restaurant on a 400 sq ft area would also be added.  
The current capacity of the airport terminal building was 500 passenger, which would be increased to three times the capacity, added the Airport Director, who had previously upgraded airports at Patna, Bhopal and Goa.  
He said the work was expected to begin in six months after estimates, tendering and work awarding were completed. The work would be completed within a year and half from its inception, he added.

Air Italy to start more flights to Amritsar

Air Italy has introduced a direct flight once a week to Amritsar and will increase it to twice a week next month.  
 
“B4 for your”, an Italian travel agency of a person of Punjabi origin, has taken the initiative to start the air service.  
 
“Delhi-bound flights from Italy earlier took long hours, including transit time,” said Raghvir Singh, managing director of Air Italy, adding that by September Air Italy would operate two flights a week to Amritsar and three by December, depending on the rush.  
 
He said new flights from Italy would be successful in promoting religious tourism also. For “Amritdhari Sikhs”, special Punjabi food would be served and even the crew would converse with them in their own language. “The main problem for a person visiting Italy for the first time is that they find difficulty in communication,” he claimed.  
 
“We have talked to the state government, which encouraged us to start the flight because in the near future, it wanted to promote the state in general and Amritsar in particular as main centre of religious tourism,” he said.

This is good news for those who are living in Italy and other neighbouring countries who have a direct flight to Amritsar, without the use of Air India flights to Delhi and catch anotehr connecting flight to Amritsar and vice-versa.

Aeroflot mulling Moscow-Amritsar flights  
 
Moscow, August 21
Russian carrier Aeroflot is weighing the option of operating flights between Amritsar and Moscow to cater to the increasing demand of people from Punjab travelling to Europe, Canada and the USA.  
 
The airliner, which operates flights between Moscow and Delhi and also Mumbai, “is exploring the possibility (of flying to Amritsar). The feasibility studies are on”, Mr Tatiana Zotova, Marketing Director of Aeroflot, told a group of visiting Indian reporters here.  
 
As Amritsar has the potential to offer enhanced passenger flow to Europe and North America, the airliner is keen on exploring the possibility of operating between Amritsar and Moscow, he said.  
 
Carrying on an average 25,000 passengers per month to Moscow, the airline was optimistic that a new route would largely cater to the people from Punjab frequenting Toronto, London and Milan. — PTI

26 off-loaded from AI flight to Birmingham

As many as 26 passengers were off-loaded from the Air-India flight to Birmingham and Toronto in view of the overbooked flight emanating from Mumbai via Delhi.  
 
The agitated passengers were later sent to Delhi by a special air-conditioned coach for taking flights to the UK and Canada.
 
The Station Manager of Air India, Mr Ashwani Arora, said that the Air-India flight had become very popular with a large number of NRI Punjabi population settled in the UK and Canada during its three months of operation. He said that the carrier had been facing this problem, as more and more passengers were opting for this flight. Mr Arora said it had been the general practice to accommodate such passengers through additional facilities, including stay in hotels and provide them seats on other flights. Special arrangement was also made for the off-loaded passengers so that they faced little inconvenience to reach their destination.
 
Meanwhile the passengers who could not board the Air-India flight pleaded with the airport staff to accommodate them in the flight but the airlines authorities expressed their inability to do so in view of the packed flight.
 
An aggrieved passenger, Ms Sushma Sharma, a club class ticket holder, who had to attend the marriage of her niece in Toronto on August 22, rued that she was carrying wedding gifts and other items, and now she was in a quandary as there was no chance of her attending the wedding.
 
Mr Vijay Gupta, a Canadian national, who had to join his job next week, faced a similar predicament, as he would not be able to report for duty on time.
 
Mr Arora, however, said that both these passengers did not carry confirmed tickets as their travel agent in Jalandhar had misled them that Air-India would definitely would provide them seats.
 
In view of the popularity of the Air India’s direct flight, the confederation of Indian Industry has sought more daily flights.

I've just checked out flight schedules for Amritsar in November 2005 on www.oagflights.com and sign up for a free trial. I have found that Malaysia Airlines are planning to launch tri-weekly flights from 3rd November 2005, although this is not been published on news or any reports.

yes sir. the malaysian airlines is starting to fly to amritsar on 3 november on tuesday thursday and saturday flight no. mh 176 is comfirmed. i confirmed this with their airlines in singapore. they were suppose to start flying in mid august but they did not have enough aircraft. they are now leasing three more aircraft from another airlines and will receive them in mid october and start flying in november.

‘Urgent need’ to instal visual device at airport

International Airlines have voiced their serious concern over the absence of Runaway Visual Range (RVR) device at the international airport here. The device records visibility for clearance to aircraft’s take-off or landing. They called for urgent installation of the device.  
 
The absence of RVR during winter or foggy season, when visibility is poor, could jeopardize flight schedules, causing loss of lakhs to operating airlines, they complain, it was argued.  
 
Airport Director V.S. Mulekar admitted to having received complaints from operating airlines besides queries from various new airlines about this.
 
He stated that Airport Authority of Indian (AAI) had taken up issue with Meterological Department and a space had been demarcated near runaway. But he could not explain the delay.
 
Seven airlines private/national have lodged complaints with the Director, AAI, for urgent steps to set up meterological device before the onset of winter as fogs, known to cover the area for many miles together, would lower visibility levels.  
 
“The probability of delay or cancellation of flight remains high and apprehension lingers about human error”, they said.
 
As many as 45 flights had been operating weekly coping with passenger rush of three lakh per annum.
 
Air Deccan, Indian Airlines, Uzbekistan Airlines, Ariana Afghan, Air India, Air Slovakia, Turkmenistan Airlines have expressed concern over the absence of the RVR device that was installed at most international airports.  
 
Malaysian and more Italian airlines were ready to launch their operations shortly. Many other international airlines too have expressed their keenness on this route.

Passengers to have access to duty-free shopping at Rajasansi Airport

“Flamingo Duty free”, the first private duty-free outlet in India, has now glided into the Rajasansi International Airport here. The concern offers a wide array of products at competitive rates and claims to have been in the forefront to bring Indian duty-free industry at par with global standards.  
 
The shopping outlet can be approached both at the arrival and the departure terminals at the airport, though it is restricted presently to the passengers with international destinations.
 
The flamingoes have already been operating in top-12 international airports in India, including those at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calicut, Chennai, Delhi, Goa, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and Trichy, and now Amritsar is the latest addition, says the spokesperson of Flamingo Duty free.  
 
The concern comprises 25 shops in various airports selling a range of chocolates, perfumes, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, tobacco, electronic items, including laptops, television sets, air conditioners and home appliances.  
 
Interestingly, one can find even “Nido” (milk powder), almonds and even pista at low prices, the concern claims. Some of the products are even cheaper than in gulf countries, say the owners.
 
Offering personalised service experience, the outlet also promises a wider variety in products and special offers! Buttressing their claim, they contend that international tie-ups enable them to offer unmatchable prices and discounts to customers which are otherwise “unattainable”.
 
The airport authorities have placed these shopping arenas beyond the baggage check-ins.

Impressed by nearly 10 per cent growth rate in international aviation in South Asia, two more American airlines — Continental and American — have decided to extend their operations to India from November 1 this year.  
 
While American Airlines will operate on Delhi-Chicago sector, Continental will air link Delhi with Newark in New Jersey.
 
While North American air carriers are evincing interest in expanding Indian market, Air Canada, the only international air carrier operating a non-stop flight between New Delhi and Toronto, has decided to make a halt in Zurich, Switzerland.
 
By end of October, the popular Delhi-Toronto-Delhi flight will be replaced by Delhi-Zurich-Toronto-Zurich-Delhi flight.
 
While more and more international carriers, especially North American and European are interested in expanding their Delhi operations; South East Asian carriers continue to view [b]Amritsar as a major market.
 
Another international air carrier eyeing Indian market in general and North India in particular is Malaysian airline, which wants to extend its operations to Amritsar.
 
Though initially Malaysian airline was keen to start its Amritsar operations from November 1 this year, but the plan has been deferred for the time being.
 
Malaysian will become second Asian airline after Singapore airline to extend its operations to Amritsar. Amritsar-Singapore flight helps passengers bound for various destinations in South east, down under (Australia-New Zealand) besides the Los Angeles and Vancouver sector of North America.

Italian airliners keen to fly to more Indian cities

New Delhi: The private sector and state-owned airlines from Italy are keen to operate to more Indian cities, including Chennai and Bangalore, the Italian Director General of Civil Aviation, Silvano Manera, has said.  Today in Sify Finance  
 
"We will make a request to the Indian authorities to allow Italian airlines to operate to Chennai, Bangalore and Kolkata. Besides, the private sector airline, Euroflight is keen to enter into an agreement with Air India to operate on the Rome-Delhi route.  
 
Similarly, the state-owned Alitalia is keen to operate on this route and is also examining the option of flying to Amritsar," Manera told Business Line on the sidelines of a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry. At present, no airline from India operates to Italy while Alitalia operates direct flights between Italy and India. However, at least one more private sector airline - Blue Panorama apart from Euroflight and one cargo airliner - Ocean were keen to operate to India, Manera said.  
 
Manera will not only be meeting the Minister for Civil Aviation, Praful Patel, and Chairman, Airports Authority of India, K. Ramalingam, but also attempt to impress on the Indian authorities the need to schedule the air services bilateral talks between India and Italy at the earliest.  
 
Earlier this year, India and the UK agreed to a bilateral air services agreement that allows the airlines from the UK to operate as many flights as they want to any Indian airport except for Delhi and Mumbai where the increase will be gradual. However, operations of airlines

Indus Airways to start ops by month-end

Indus Airways, promoted by Kapil Mohan of Mohan Meakins, is planning to launch operations by the end of the month.
  
The airlines would be operating from Delhi and Mumbai with two 50 seater Canadian regional jets (CRJs).  
 
"The CRJ-200s, leased from Lufthansa, would be inducted in the coming weeks and three more would join the fleet by the year end," Kapil Mohan said.
 
The CRJs would operate in a single-class configuration, and would be fitted with executive class seats, Mohan added.
 
Indus Airways is planning to operate flights to cities like Chandigarh, Amritsar, Jammu, Ahmedabad, Bhopal and Indore.

Indus Airways -- the origin of India

NEW DELHI: The Indian economy is growing at a galloping pace. It grew a robust 8.1 percent in the April-June 2005 quarter from a year ago, lifted by strong manufacturing as well as services such as banking and tourism. India has become the second most favoured destination for investments. With the opening up of the aviation sector for the private sector, more and more airlines are planning to commence flights. New airlines that are planning to take to wings are Jeh Wadia's GoAir and Coimbatore-headquartered Paramount Airways.
 
Another airline that is planning to commence operations by October-end is Indus Airways -- the origin of India. Indus is obtaining two 50-seater CRJ-200 from Lufthansa in the next couple of weeks with the buyback lease of five years. Three more CRJ-200s would join the fleet by the year-end, according to Brig Kapil Mohan, Chairman of Mohan Meakins.  
 
To expand its connectivity, the Chairman said the airline would purchase two 75-seater CRJ-700s and three Boeing 737-800 aircraft in 2006 taking its strength to ten. Brig Kapil Mohan, who is also Chairman of Indus Airways and is the main promoter of the airline, said the actual date of the launch in October was being worked out with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and would be announced soon.
 
Besides Brig Kapil Mohan, Indus Airways has three Directors on the Board including Mr Krishan Gopal Beri, who is Managing Director of M/s Beri and Beri Cold Storage and General Mills (P) Ltd; Mr Parminder Lakhanpal, a London-based NRI; and Mr Baldev Seth, a garment exporter. Mr Amarjit Sangha, a Toronto-based NRI, is one of the investors in the airline that has a starting equity base of Rs 10 crore.
 
The airline plans to launch operations on two sectors. First being Delhi-Chandigarh-Mumbai-Jammu and return and the second sector being Delhi-Amritsar-Mumbai-Goa and return. "These are hitherto unconnected sectors and have a huge potential," he said. The CRJs would operate in a single class configuration and would be fitted with executive class seats. While foreign pilots would operate the aircraft, Indus Airways has sent several Indian pilots to Montreal for being trained on the CRJs.
 
He said the airline would provide "very reasonable fares with best of frills." On the long-haul flights, he said the airline would provide good quality food for which we have hired some specialists. He said "it will be service with a smile." Brig Kapil Mohan, who is known is known as a doer, said "the airline has hired professionals to take the airline to new heights in the Indian aviation."
 
He said the airline has hired two best aviators for its operations in Northern and Central and Southern India. Capt A P C Kapoor, ex-Director (operations) Air India and a senior Commander and instructor of Boeing 747-400, would be based in Mumbai and head the operations of Central and Southern India.  
 
Similarly, Capt M S Sandhu, ex-General Manager, Air India and Boeing 747 instructor, would be based in Chandigarh and head the operations of Northern India. Mr G S Bankoti, also ex-Air India, would look after Administration and Safety. The airline has also hired 10 foreign pilots and 10 Indian co-pilots, 20-cabin crew and 20 ground staff, and six engineers. Airline's full-fledged reservation system would be in place shortly, said Mr Krishan Gopal Beri and added that both the aircraft would be based in Delhi.
 
Mr Beri said the emphasis would be on quality - be it food, service or in-flight comforts. He said there would also be emphasis on on-time performance and intelligent schedules. "In other words, a passenger could catch a flight early morning and return home by night after completing his task. That will also save him on his hotel bills." He said the company would offer honest and straightforward flat fares.  
 
Designed to provide superior efficiencies to small operators and major airlines alike, Mr Baldev Seth said the Bombardier CRJ200 aircraft has firmly established itself as the world's quietest and most environmentally friendly commercial jet aircraft. He said the aircraft's 50-seat capacity and low trip cost -- fuel burn is 10 per cent less than its nearest competitor -- allow airlines to provide jet services on routes where low load factors make larger jet aircraft unprofitable.
 
Mr Seth said the Bombardier CRJ200 can extend the range from hub airports or bypass congested hubs for more non-stop services between cities in smaller markets. The aircraft complements some bigger jets by flying their routes at off-peak times of day, allowing airlines to maintain the all-important flight frequency.
 
Mr Amarjeet Sangha said the 64- to 70- passenger Bombardier CRJ700 Series 701 and 75-seat Bombardier CRJ700 Series 705 are members of the highly successful Bombardier CRJ family of regional jets.  
 
Ever since entering service over a decade ago, the Bombardier CRJ has changed the way people travel. Today, more than 1,200 Bombardier CRJ aircraft fly with operators large and small all over the world. The first Bombardier CRJ100 was delivered to Lufthansa in 1992, after the initial flight in November 1991. In 1996, the Bombardier CRJ200 was launched with higher performance engines. The Bombardier CRJ700 made its maiden flight in May 1999 and was delivered to inaugural customer Brit Air/Air France in January 2001.

Poor civic amenities at Rajasansi airport

While the Rajasansi International Airport is supposedly being upgraded by the authorities, the conveniences offered there have gone into a downward spiral.  
 
The two lavatories in the departure waiting lounge are stinking to knock a weak hearted person out of his senses. The flushes are out of order and the ventilators in the back wall are low enough to help a passerby have a look into the activity going on inside the loo.
 
The most shocking experience one would have there is in corner of the hall having two large water coolers attached to two water filters, out of which one is out of order while the other had only one outlet tap giving out a weak squirt of the nature’s nectar.
 
Even this was stopped allegedly by the contractor of the canteen to mint money from the sale his products. The disappointed visitors have to buy a mineral water bottle, which is being sold at much higher rates than its market price in the canteen, located in one corner of the lounge.  
 
On being asked the canteen boy admitted that “Asi dehd lakh da theka aive ta nahi leya, kujh kamauna vi ta hai” (we have received a contract for Rs 1.5 lakh and must earn from it) was his bashful reply.
 
Further, the condition of mineral water bottles did not require a journalist’s eye to swear by the fact that the bottle had been filled up from tap and then sealed off manually. The experience at the airport upsets many passengers and brings bad repute to the nation and its authorities, many say.

Afghanistan airlines Ariana Afghan, the first to start international flight between Amritsar and Kabul, has temporarily suspended its operations due to the non-feasibility of cargo and flight passengers.  
 
According to internal feasibility report of the airlines, the non-commissioning of cargo terminal and loss of passenger booking, including business travellers to the war-ravaged country has been the main hurdle. The flight was operating once a week earlier, but in the past six months only six flights took off.  
 
Only one flight took off last month and no flight has taken off this month, admitted Mr Prithvi Raj, Manager, Ariana Afghan. The killing of a kidnapped Indian in Afghanistan has further created tension and would adversely affect the flight operations.
 
The fact that Delhi airport was better equipped for cargo-handling with lesser costs to exporters/ importers, has attracted bulk of operations from Kabul. Besides facilities for re-routing goods arriving from several countries to Kabul, it was favoured for international aid, re-building and construction contracts worth crores.

‘Upgrade Rajasansi Airport to tap
tourism potential of Punjab’

To mitigate the problems faced by NRIs and other Punjabis in boarding international flights from Indira Gandhi International Airport, it is imperative that Rajasansi Airport near Amritsar be developed into an international airport complete with all facilities.  
 
The Punjab government should take up the matter concerning the expansion of Rajasansi Airport with the Centre immediately. Also, efforts should be made to convert the Jalandhar-Amritsar and Jalandhar-Pathankot roads into six-lane roads.
 
This was observed by Dr Manohar Singh Gill, MP and former Chief Election Commission of India, who was here to inaugurate the Lala Lajpat Rai College of Nursing Education set up by the Gulab Devi Memorial Hospital Trust on the premises of Gulab Devi Hospital here today.
 
Mr Gill said about 45 per cent of foreign travellers, who took flights to different countries from Delhi Airport were from Punjab. They faced many problems in going to Delhi and taking the flight from the airport there. The problems also kept foreign tourists at bay and discouraged them, despite the fact that Punjab was a good tourist destination, he added.  
 
“Expansion of Amritsar airport will not only offer more facilities to NRIs and tourists, but would also give a boost to the economy of Punjab. More tourists would get attracted to the state, which has a large number of historical places,” he said.
 
He also suggested that to give a fillip to trade and industry, an International Export Centre could be set up in Punjab, from where agricultural produce, including fresh vegetables, could be exported to the Gulf and other countries. The proposed centre could also export apples from Himachal, and Jammu and Kashmir, and in turn, the revenue of these two states could increase, and farmers could benefit from the export of their crop.
 
Lamenting that sportspersons (apart from cricketers) were not being encouraged in Punjab, he said, “Budding sportspersons from Punjab have a great potential, but this needs to be tapped. For this, they need better facilities.”
 
Laying emphasis on the need to educate women, he said education was the “real gift” that parents and society could give to girls. “Education enables a woman to fight against all odds,” he said, adding that there was a great demand for Indian nurses in foreign countries.
 
Ms G. Bajwa, Principal of the College of Nursing, Gulab Devi Hospital, also spoke on the occasion.

Lanka explores options to boost air links with India

NEW DELHI, NOV 28:  In a bid to further boost tourist inflows from India, Sri Lanka is looking at expanding its air services to more cities, including Ahmedabad, Goa and Kolkata. The island nation which currently operates the largest number of international flights from India — about 90 a week — is looking to start at least three flights from each of the new destinations by March 2006.  
The neighbouring country is also exploring possibilities of starting air services from Colombo to Amritsar. The Punjab government presented a draft MoU to this effect to the Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) on Monday.  
 
Additionally, the country is also looking at starting ferry services between the two countries, Sri Lanka Tourism Board chairman Udaya Nanayakkar told reporters.  
 
India accounted for the single largest chunk of arrivals — 21% — into Sri Lanka totalling 82,434 for the first nine months of calendar year 2005, reflecting a 21.5% growth over 2004. “Tourist arrivals from India will exceed one lakh in 2005 and are expected to exceed 2.5 lakh by the end of the decade,” Mr Nanayakkar said.  
 
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s tourism industry — the fourth largest contributor at $430 million in 2004 to that country’s GDP — has rebounded strongly following the devastating effects of the tsunami which hit the country in December 2004.  
 
According to the SLTB chief, visitor arrivals in the first nine months of the year have reached 4,05,585, recording an increase of 8% over the same period of January-September in 2004.  
 
The country is now expecting the peak tourist season from November to March to be another record year, with projections indicating that visitor arrivals will exceed the five lakh mark for the third consecutive year.  
 
Elaborating further, Mr Nanayakkar said that a few Indian hospitality majors have also shown keen interest in developing hotels in the country. Apart from the Taj Group, which currently has three properties and is now investing in developing the fourth, two more investors are keen to invest in developing 200-room hotels in Sri Lanka, he added.

Plane returns after Iran refuses permission

Amritsar, November 28
A lot of inconvenience caused to 131 passengers along with a crew of eight travelling by Air Slovakia flight GM 556 from here to Bergmao (Milan) when the Civil Aviation Department of Iran refused permission to overfly its territory. The passengers were stranded here for over 12 hours last night.  
 
The spokesman of Air Slovakia, Mr G.P. Singh, said this was perhaps for the first time that this unsavory situation occurred as they had valid permission but due to communication gap, the Iranian air controller refused permission to overfly its territory and plane had to return to Amritsar. He added that the confusion was further compounded as yesterday being Sunday holiday in both India and Iran and as such they were unable to take permission from the higher authorities.  
 
The flight took off this morning after due permission was accorded today from both the governments.  
 
In the meanwhile, due to inclement weather in Kabul, the scheduled Jeddah-Dubai-Kabul flight of Airana-Afgan airlines had to be diverted to Rajasansi airport this morning. According to the local manager, Mr Prithivi Raj Dhiman, the flight took off after two hours when the weather cleared over Kabul.

new airport?, what crap!, lousy service, corrupt officials at the custom office. Airport official who check you past lugage  clearance ie immigration - begging for rupees or bakshish. Same old India and its officers corrupt corrupt. Cant take take it out even at  the air port!

SIA increases flights to Australia, India  
SINGAPORE - Singapore Airlines (SIA) said on Friday it has increased flights to India and Australia to cater for seasonally high demand during the year-end holiday season.  
 
The carrier said it has put another two flights to Perth, raising its frequency to the Australian city to 21 times a week.  
 
For India, the carrier has launched an extra service to New Delhi this month, bringing its weekly frequency to eight and in January, SIA will add two more services on the route. SIA will also add one more flight to Amritsar from January onwards, raising its services to the Indian destination to four times a week. --AFP
