US-bound Air India passengers left out in cold Chandigarh | December 22, 2005 6:15:05 PM IST Passengers of a Los Angeles-bound Air India flight were forced to spend long hours in the chill of the night outside the lounge at the Amritsar airport. As many as 84 passengers of the flight from New Delhi were stranded in the open in the wee hours of Wednesday as authorities had shut down the airport lounge. The flight could not take off from Amritsar's airport due to dense fog that reduced visibility to just a few metres instead of the mandatory 1,300 metres. While the passengers had landed at Amritsar at 2.10 a.m., they were told that the lounge would open only in the morning when the airport staff came for duty. As the visibility did not improve even after 12 hours, the passengers were sent off to Delhi by road to catch the next available flight to Los Angeles. The passengers said that the Air India staff and airport officials were far from helpful. "They made us spend the night in sub-zero temperatures out in the open. And nobody even apologised for that," a passenger said. Airport and airline officials, when contacted, declined to comment. (IANS)
