10. Feb 2007 at 11:41

Amritsar Vikas Manch has demanded the disclosure of the names of the candidates who are facing criminal cases in the media so that public should know what type of persons are these to whom they are going to pole their vote. It is also demanded to take appropriate action against those candidates who have not got PAN and have not shown the actual property they have. In a fax letter to the  The Chief Election Commissioner of India Mr. N.Gopalaswami and Chief  Election Commissioner Punjab Mr. Sundram Krishan, Manch advisor Dr. Charanjit Singh Gumtala stated that different news papers have published about the candidates facing criminal cases. According to these reports 74 candidates of recognised parties have been facing charges as serious as murder, rape, kidnapping, cheating, sedition and even bigamy. Several candidates donít have a PAN card, which is mandatory for anybody who earns more than Rs 8,333 a month or Rs 1 lakh annually. They include five candidates having assets worth more than Rs 5 crore. Among the main parties, 32 candidates of the Congress, 20 of the SAD, 77 of the BSP and three of the BJP do not have PAN cards. As many as 45 candidates are worth more than Rs 5 crore and a whopping 173 have more than Rs 1 crore worth of assets.
